Shades of Grey

There are so many different perspectives in this world. No two people will see things in the exact same way. Just look at your Facebook feed for instance, what one person is offended by the next is emboldened by. We all perceive things differently, in part due to the values our parents and grandparents instilled in us, or the lack there of, but also in the experiences and relationships that have shaped us along the way.

I’ve been thinking about black and white vs. shades of grey lately as it relates to open-mindedness. I’ve always been quite open-minded. I can quite easily put myself in another person’s shoes and imagine what it must be like for them in whatever situation…a blessing and a curse honestly. I’ve gotten better at viewing this as a tool to help me relate to people, while still keeping my boundaries up and not taking on their “stuff”. There are also people in this world that do not see shades of grey – they see everything in black and white. It is either good or bad, beneficial or hindering – all bad things deserve the same punishment and all the good things deserve the same reward.

Dictionary.com really hit this nail right on the head!!

In my experience the ones who only see black and white are quite closed minded. They lack a level of empathy and are unable to see anything from someone else’s point of view. I could be making a HUGE generalization here, don’t get me wrong there are always exceptions, but there I go again seeing shades of grey HAHA!

I guess my main goal with this post is that I am seeing a parallel, I also want to start the conversation and maybe even help others to see things a little differently. I’ve known plenty of closed minded people in my life – I’ve learned those aren’t really my people.

Here’s the reason, I want to discuss ideas and be heard! I also want to listen and hear what you think, but refusing to hear any differing opinion will discourage me from continuing any type of discussion.

So, let’s converse about differing ideas – we should all be learning knew things, and be open to accepting those new things. There’s so much knowledge to be gained in this world, it’s the silliest thing to believe you know it all already.

Have an awesome weekend!

Much Love,
